SUMMARY: Walter Terry introduces Martha Swope, official photographer for Martha Graham and Company and the New York City Ballet; he outlines the topic: the problem and process of capturing the essence of the dance by means of still photography. Miss Swope discusses the means of revealing the peak moments of a dance: those movements most easily photographed, the correct moment to shoot; photographing with the eye of a photographer, with the eye of a dancer, with the eye of a fashion photographer such as George Platt Lynes; photographing dance in rehearsal or performance vs. photographing in the studio; differences between photographing ballet and photographing Martha Graham's dances; the uses of close-ups; photographic studies; the value of photographs for dance archives.
