- Kenneth MacMillan speaks with John Gruen about his career, beginning with his early ballet training and dancing; his early choreography; his first ballet for Dame Ninette [de Valois], Danses concertantes; his Noctambules for the Royal Ballet; his work for other companies, including in Germany and Sweden; his current position as artistic director of the Royal Ballet, including his responsibility for choosing the repertoire and casting; his ballet Anastasia, including his feelings about negative reviews; his attempt to put more realism into ballet, as in Anastasia; his efforts to introduce works into the repertoire by contemporary choreographers such as George Balanchine and Glen Tetley; (briefly) Rudolf Nureyev; (briefly) Margot Fonteyn, as a dancer; (briefly) the attributes of the English style of dancer as compared to the Balanchine style; supervision of new ballets; upcoming works; his response to criticism of his direction of the Royal Ballet; the burden of tradition; his leisure activities; dancers' complaints; his personal life; his feelings about being booed in New York City.
