John Gruen speaks with Paul Mejia and Suzanne Farrell about their backgrounds; their training at the School of American Ballet including the difficulties of also pursuing academic studies while there; the circumstances of their leaving New York City Ballet; Farrell speaks about George Balanchine and her relationship with him including dancing with him in his ballet Don Quixote; Mejia and Farrell speak about their relationship and how it adversely affected their relationship with Balanchine; more on Farrell's relationship with Balanchine and the company; the circumstances of their joining Maurice Béjart's company [Ballet du XXe siècle]; Béjart as a teacher; whether they would return to New York City Ballet if invited; dancing in Béjart's company.

This interview was used as a basis for a chapter in John Gruen's book, The private world of ballet (New York, Viking Press). Gruen occasionally contributes his own knowledge of some of the events discussed.
