John Gruen speaks with John Prinz about his career beginning with his background including how moved he was by a performance he saw of Giselle with Alicia Alonso and Igor Youskevitch; his early ballet training; his leaving Chicago at age 15 to study ballet in New York City, at the Joffrey Ballet school and then the School of American Ballet; his teachers at the School of American Ballet; his time at the New York City Ballet in particular his personal turmoil; his wife [Nanette Glushak]; Balanchine's kindness to him; the circumstances of his joining American Ballet Theatre; more on his personal relationships and his wife; how he feels about dancing for example when he was performing Monument [Rudi van Dantzig's Monument for a dead boy]; partnering including [Natalia] Markova and Carla Fracci as partners; male guest artists including [Paolo] Bortoluzzi; the wide range of his roles at American Ballet Theatre; [ends abruptly].
