Summary
Streaming audio file (approximately 26 minutes). [Music and introductory remarks.] Walter Terry speaks about the phenomenal growth of ballet's popularity in New York City, as evidenced by the fact that the New York City Ballet, the Royal Ballet and American Ballet Theatre may all be concurrently seen at Lincoln Center; the contrast with the situation of thirty years ago when Sol Hurok brought the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo to New York City; the dance explosion in the United States and New York's status as the dance capital; the differing styles and repertoires of the Royal Ballet, New York City Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre; their different versions of Swan lake; the opportunity to see and compare Bronislava Nijinska's Les noces danced by the Royal Ballet and Jerome Robbins' Les noces, danced by New York City Ballet, as well as Balanchine's A midsummer night's dream and Frederick Ashton's The dream; other companies that will be performing in the coming weeks [closing remarks and music].
