Barbara Weisberger, founder of the Pennsylvania Ballet, speaks with Marilyn Hunt about the company and its upcoming residency at the Brooklyn Academy of Music including the company's two New York premieres: George Balanchine's Symphony in C and Hans van Manen's Grosse Fuge; staging Balanchine's ballets; the use of apprentices to fill out the cast in Symphony in C; Hans van Manen and his relationship with the company; his ballet Grosse fuge; Lawrence Rhodes and other members of the company; the change to alphabetical listing of the dancers; the company's relationship with the Brooklyn Academy of Music; factors leading to the founding of the company, in Philadelphia, including Balanchine's encouragement; the spring season including the ballet La sylphide; Lupe Serrano; other ballets in the repertory including Lilac garden [Le jardin aux lilas] and Van Manen's Septet extra; the company's annual residency at the Nittany Mountain Summer at Pennsylvania State University [ends abruptly].
