- Streaming audio file (approximately 33 minutes). [Ambient noise of crowded room]. Henry Geldzahler, Cultural Commissioner of New York City, introduces briefly Martha Hill, Jack Anderson, and Anna Kisselgoff (members of the Capezio Dance Awards committee), Roberta Flack, Alvin Ailey, George Faison, and the Capezio representatives: Alfred Terlizzi, Nicholas Terlizzi, and Ben Sommers; he speaks about possible causes for the current "dance explosion" in the United States; reads aloud a congratulatory telegram from U. S. Senator Jacob Javits; introduces the first speaker, George Faison; Faison speaks about Alvin Ailey and his cultural importance; Geldzahler introduces Roberta Flack in the course of which he tells an anecdote about Billy Graham; Roberta Flack speaks about Alvin Ailey and his work; Geldzahler introduces Ben Sommers who presents the award to Ailey; in accepting the award Ailey pays tribute to all the people who influenced and helped him; current problems in the dance world including the lack of reliable funding [applause]; Geldzahler's closing remarks.

Henry Geldzahler, the master of ceremonies, Alvin Ailey, recipient of the award, George Faison, and Roberta Flack speak at the ceremony. The award is presented by Ben Sommers.
