[Introduction of Rudi van Dantzig.] Rudi van Dantzig speaks about the Dutch National Ballet [Nationale Ballet (Netherlands)] and its repertoire; the financial support of the national government and the requirement that the company tour domestically; the North American tour and the nature of the repertoire to be performed; the choreographers Hans van Manen and Toer van Schayk; Sonia Gaskell and her contribution to dance in the Netherlands; the film [The making of a ballet, Rudi van Dantzig, a choreographer and his world, 1973] to be shown; in response to questions from the audience, Van Dantzig speaks about the composition of the company; dance training in the Netherlands; the music heard in the film; the works by George Balanchine in the company's repertoire; the complete dependence of the company financially on government support and the correspondingly low price of tickets; the difficulties faced by young choreographers; the relatively non-hierarchical structure of the company; his choreographic method; works by Balanchine he would like to see the company perform; the use of video films to learn and rehearse ballets; the commissioning of the film by the Netherlands government; his ballet Painted birds.
