John Gruen, host, introduces Robert Joffrey and speaks about the Joffrey Ballet; Robert Joffrey speaks with Gruen about the Joffrey Ballet's upcoming, 20th anniversary season including its emphasis on American choreographers; Gerald Arpino's new work [entitled Orpheus times light]; George Balanchine's Square dance; the company's growth over the last 20 years; his hope to create a ballet school with scholarships for all of the students; his vision of the Joffrey Ballet as a company devoted to modern [20th century] and new ballets; Leonide Massine [a recording of an excerpt from Richard Wagner's Wesendonk lieder, used in Robert Joffrey's ballet Remembrances, is played]; Joffrey speaks about Remembrances in particular the music and Francesca Corkle as the ideal dancer for a ballet set to it; the recent departure of certain dancers from the company; works scheduled to be performed in the upcoming season including Agnes de Mille's Rodeo and Ruthanna Boris' ballet Cakewalk; Twyla Tharp; other works being performed including Gerald Arpino's Drums, dreams and banjos and his Olympics; Joffrey's Astarte [a recording of Louis Gottschalk's The gala cakewalk, as adapted and orchestrated by Hershy Kay and used in Boris' Cakewalk, is played]; Joffrey speaks about Arpino's contribution as a choreographer to the company; closing remarks.
