[Begins abruptly.] John Gruen, as host, introduces his guest, the concert pianist Christoph Eschenbach; Christoph Eschenbach and Gruen speak about Eschenbach's love of ballet even as a teenager; his first and subsequent meetings with John Neumeier; Neumeier's ballet Meyerbeer/Schumann including the incongruity of pairing these two composers and Eschenbach's participation in this work [a recording of music, three of the Kinderszenen by Robert Schumann, is played] Eschenbach speaks about what it was like to perform on stage with the dancers [a recording of four more Kinderszenen is played]; Gruen and Eschenbach speak about Hans van Mannen's ballet Adagio, Hammerklavier, which uses a recording of Eschenbach performing Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano sonata, op. 106, the "Hammerklavier sonata"; John Neumeier's new ballets set to Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony and Fourth Symphony, respectively; conducting for ballet; working with Lynn Seymour [a recording of the third movement of the Hammerklavier sonata is played]; Eschenbach's upcoming engagements; closing remarks [ambient noise].
