[Music and introductory remarks by Oscar Buhler.] John Gruen, host, introduces Kurt Jooss and Anna Markard, Jooss's daughter, and speaks about the upcoming performances of his work by the Joffrey Ballet; Kurt Jooss speaks with Gruen about the dramatic elements of his choreography including the relationship of emotion and movement and the influence of Rudolf von Laban; reasons his ballet The big city and other works are short compared to today's ballets [a recording of waltz music by Joseph Lanner is played]; Jooss speaks about his ballet Ball in old Vienna and its revival by the Joffrey Ballet; Anna Markard speaks about the process of reviving a ballet such as Ball in old Vienna; Jooss speaks about his ballet Pavane (set to Maurice Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte); Antony Tudor; Markard speaks about how she works with dancers [a recording of Pavane pour une infante défunte is played followed by commerical announcements]; Gruen and Jooss speak about the revival of Pavane by the Joffrey Ballet; his lost ballets; the Ballet Jooss; his and the company members' flight from National Socialist Germany; his admiration for Jerome Robbins' work; his dislike of the impersonal quality of the dancers in George Balanchine's ballets; his current activities promoting dance internationally; closing remarks, advertisements, and announcements.
