- Disc 1 (approximately 47 minutes). Lar Lubovitch speaks with John Gruen about the relationship of men and women in his work including in his dance Girl on fire; his works Rapid transit; Zig zag; and Prelude in C minor; his dancing at Trude Heller's dance club to support himself while performing with modern dance companies; his brain injury and how this experience affected him; his time at the Harkness Ballet, in particular how this led to his becoming an independent choreographer; his first commissions; forming his own company [now Lar Lubovitch Dance Company]; the effect of the company's success on him artistically and intellectually; his closing of the company and taking a year off to study and reflect; his achieving intellectual freedom and control; forming his present company [recording ends abruptly but continues on disc 2].

Lar Lubovitch speaks with John Gruen about his choreography for American Ballet Theatre, including Scherzo for Massah Jack and Three essays; teaching at the University of California, in Los Angeles; forming a new company; his realization that he choreographs in order to dance; his choreographic methods including the factors that influence his choice of music; his use of all existing dance vocabulary; his striving to create dances that have meaning for people; his newest work [not identified], which he is creating for the [United States] Bicentennial, using music composed by Charles Ives.

- Interview with Lar Lubovitch conducted by John Gruen on December 25, 1975, at Gruen's home in New York City, as background for an article that appeared in Dance magazine (February, 1977, pages 44-47).
- Sound quality is good overall. The recording is marred by extraneous noise including "tape hiss" as well as occasional short gaps. However, the speakers' voices are easily intelligible.
