- Disc 1 (approximately 48 minutes). Daniel Nagrin speaks with John Gruen about his background and first exposure to dance including at the New Dance Group and at Martha Graham's school; his teacher Ray Moses; his summer at Unity House; his focus on dance after graduating from college; working with Anna Sokolow; his experience at Martha Graham's school including the competitive atmosphere; his parents' support of his decision to be a dancer; his teachers including Fanya Chochem and Sue [Suzanne] Remos for jazz and Madame [Elizaveta] Anderson-Ivantzova for ballet; his return to Unity House; Helen Tamiris including her influence on his creative process [ends abruptly but continues on disc 2].

Daniel Nagrin continues to speak with John Gruen about the new direction of his dancing; Helen Tamiris including their work in musical comedy; reason he did not like performing in musical theater; his experience working on a production of Stefan Zweig's Volpone; his career as a solo dancer; Tamiris's move away from musical theater and the formation of the Tamiris-Nagrin Dance Company; more on his work as a solo dancer of his own choreography; his seeking of and response to Tamiris's comments on his work; political themes in his work, for example his Peloponnesian war; [ends abruptly but continues on disc 3].

- Sound quality is good. The recording is marred by extraneous noise and occasional short gaps but the speakers' voices are easily intelligible.
