- [Introductory remarks by host, Elinor Rogosin.] John Clifford, dancer and choreographer with the New York City Ballet, speaks with Elinor Rogosin about dancing in [Peter Martins'] ballet Piano rag-music; his own ballets including his work Symphony in E flat; his view of himself as a disciple of George Balanchine; differences between how Balanchine and Jerome Robbins approach choreographing; his admiration for Balanchine's use of music including, for example, in Rubies [the middle section from Balanchine's ballet Jewels]; Balanchine's encouragement of his choreographing; the mechanics of choreographing including Clifford's approach to music and choosing the dancers; working with Peter Martins and Gelsey Kirkland on Symphony in E flat for the 1972 Stravinsky Festival; Merrill Ashley including the reasons he preferred her performance over Kirkland's in Symphony in E flat; more on the mechanics of his choreographing; his background as a child actor and dancer on stage and television; studying with Maya Plisetskaya; his first professional choreography job, when he was 15; Robbins' and Balanchine's different views of Clifford's pronounced musicality when performing their works; the New York City Ballet as a learning experience preparatory to coming into his own as a choreographer elsewhere, apart from Balanchine [music and closing remarks by Rogosin].
