John Gilpin speaks with Marilyn Hunt about first meeting Marie Rambert at a dance competition; his early dance training; joining Marie Rambert's company [Ballet Rambert] in 1946; his time with the company including the tour in Australia; reminiscences of Rambert; dancing with Roland Petit's company [Ballets de Paris of Roland Petit]; his eight months with the Marquis de Cuevas's ballet [Grand Ballet de Monte Carlo]; the circumstances of his leaving Rambert [following a brief gap, the second part of the interview, recorded on December 31, 1976, begins at 24:01]; Gilpin speaks further about his time with the Grand Ballet de Monte Carlo; why he did not accept Ninette de Valois's offer to dance for her company, Sadler's Wells Ballet; his time with the London Festival Ballet [now the English National Ballet] including an anecdote about dancing with Alicia Markova in The nutcracker; guest dancers he partnered including Alexandra Danilova; [Tamara] Toumanova; Yvette Chauviré as a partner; Belinda Wright; some of his favorite roles including Albrecht; the Witch boy (in Jack Carter's ballet The witch boy); his roles in Anthony Burke's work Symphony for fun and in [Wazlaw] Orlikowsky's ballet Peer Gynt; his thoughts about his own dancing [ends abruptly].
