Summary
  • Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 17 minutes). Walter Terry records a series of questions he would like to ask Dorothy Alexander as research for his book on regional ballet; topics include: her company, Dorothy Alexander Concert Dancers, founded in 1928; the development of regional ballet from seasonal festivals to standing companies; the relationship between the growth in regional ballet and standards of technique, choreography, and teaching as well as audience preferences in the relevant regions; funding sources; whether dance that disturbs should have a place on regional dance programs.

[Sound quality is poor.] Dorothy Alexander records her answers to Walter Terry's questions as well as speaking about other topics including: her own training and dance career; the formation of the Atlanta Civic Ballet [now the Atlanta Ballet]; the development of regional ballet companies throughout the United States; what she sees as the purpose of regional ballet. After listening to the recording of herself, Alexander adds a few clarifying remarks.

  • Walter Terry records a series of questions to be answered by Dorothy Alexander (streaming audio file 1; approximately 16 minutes); Dorothy Alexander records her responses (streaming audio file 2; approximately 57 minutes), in Augusta, Georgia, in 1977. The interview is conducted as part of Terry's research for a book on regional ballet. It is not clear if this book was ever published.
  • Sound quality is good in streaming audio file 1. It is poor in streaming audio file 2; the interviewee's voice is very soft and difficult to understand, and the recording is marred by occasional bursts of noise.
