- Summary
- Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 48 minutes). Madeleine Nichols as moderator introduces herself and the panelists: German choreographers Susanne Linke and Reinhild Hoffmann, the American dance writer Marcia B. Siegel, the German dance writers Jochen Schmidt and Susanne Schlicher, and the American dance writer Susan Manning. Susanne Schlicher reads her paper on the relationship between Tanztheater and theater in (the former) West Germany in the 1980s. The panelists respond, discussing the origins and development of Tanztheater including the seminal roles of Hans [Johan] Kresnik and Pina Bausch and Tanztheater's current status with audiences and critics; at approximately 41 minutes, a question and answer session begins; topics discussed in response to the (mostly inaudible) questions include Pina Baush's Rite of spring; whether German culture is reflected in Tanztheater, and other influences on Tanztheater; and the spreading of Tanztheater's influence [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2].
- Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 48 minutes). Jochen Schmidt continues to speak (briefly) on the spreading influence of Tanztheater; in response to [Marcia B. Siegel's?] remarks about Tanztheater in [the former] East Germany, the panelists discuss the differences between Tanztheater in the East and the West as well as the influence of American dance and theater; in response to (mostly inaudible) further questions, the panelists speak about contemporary German audiences of Tanztheater; the effects of World War II; working methods; Susanne Linke's Hommage à Dore Hoyer; the selection and training of Tanztheater performers [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 3].
- Streaming audio file 3 (approximately 8 minutes). Suzanne Linke (?) continues to speak about the selection and training of performers; in response to audience questions (only the first of which is intelligible), the panelists speak about venues for Tanztheater; and the redefining of dance.
