- Summary
- Disc 1 (approximately 47 minutes). [Begins abruptly.] Dame Ninette de Valois speaks with David Raher about the adaptation of plays for ballet, including [Leonid] Lavrovskiĭ's ballet Romeo and Juliet; her view that one should not choreograph for the audience; translating stories from literature into dance; her refusal to engage in a vicarious conversation with Clive Barnes [whom Raher has been frequently quoting as a basis for his questions]; more on adapting literature to a dance work; [in response to a question concerning John Cranko's criticism of José Limón's The moor's pavane] her refusal to criticize other choreographers' work; more on her refusal to engage in debate with Barnes; comic ballets including the special facility of the English for comedy; the analysis of other choreographers' approach as a job for critics and the public, not for her; ballet and mime; Serge Diaghilev, including his foresight in reviving the classic, full-length ballet; very briefly, [Robert] Helpmann's Hamlet; Benesh dance notation and the Royal Ballet; the importance of notation [ends abruptly].
