- Summary
- Documentary on Jacob's Pillow, exploring its multiple roles as theater/presenter, dance company and school. The program includes a brief biography of founder Ted Shawn, who is seen in conversation with associate director John Christian. Walking about the grounds, Shawn relates the history of the various buildings, the formation of his men's company, and the establishment and aims of the school. He also discusses his vision of the future for Jacob's Pillow and for dance in general. Featured in scenes of the school are the Spanish dancing class of Carola Goya and Matteo, Margaret Craske's ballet class, Myra Kinch's modern dance class (with her husband Manuel Galea at the piano), and La Meri's class in the use of ethnic dance materials as a source for creative movement. A class taught by Shawn is seen under the closing credits. Nel Roos rehearses the students in a group work. The students' viewpoint is provided through an interview with scholarship student Betty Thorpe and a conversation among a group of students. Performance footage includes excerpts from the peasant pas de deux from Giselle, Act I (seen at the beginning and end of the telecast), danced by Claire Motte and Juan Giuliano ; two Spanish dances by Carola Goya and Matteo ; and Myra Kinch in her solo Bird watcher.
