SUMMARY: Lecture-demonstration on Kalarippayatt, an ancient martial art of Kerala, in Southwest India, which has also played an important part in the training of actors. Professor Zarrilli discusses the preliminary physical culture system, including massage, the weapons used in practice (wooden) and in actual combat (metal), and demonstrates the poses, steps, jumps, and kicks. Included are filmed excerpts from India of practice combat with wooden sticks and with sword and shield.
