Engraving, plate mark; 20.2 x 27.3 cm.
Subjects
Note
  • An engraving after a satirical sketch by Hogarth, prompted by the leaps and elevation of La Barberina and Desnoyer when they danced in London, circa 1741.
  • A theatrical setting, standing spectators at boths sides applauding. Barberina Campanini is leaping in the air, both legs thrown out to the sides. Desnoyer, wearing a tonnelet and plumed headpiece, is also jumping, his feet in first position.
  • Dotted lines indicating the height of the jumps and a "scale of feet" permit the viewer to appreciate the relative merits of each dancer.
  • Reproduced in Dance Magazine, September 1950, p. 14.
