Summary
A program of seventeenth and eighteenth century American social dance and music, with authentic costumes of the period and narration from contemporary accounts. The early Colonial scene in an Anglican community, Merrymount, Massachusetts, 1628, is represented by country dances and a morris dance (Cuckoo's nest). A 1770 Boston Assembly Ball is recreated with a minuet. Frontier dances include three and six-handed reels. A 1790 Philadelphia Assembly Ball presents an 18th century version of the Virginia reel and a cotillion. Also included are clog dances, square dances, and a final sword dance.
