- Eighteen-year-old Melanie Alexander, a ballet student at Eugene Loring's American School of Dance in Hollywood is chosen by Loring to star in a ballet, Story of an American dancer, which is to be based on her own real life experiences. She is seen in various stages of her development as a dancer, from childhood on, in ballet classes, rehearsals, and finally in the opening night performance of the ballet about her life.
