Summary
Documentary on the life and work of Maya Deren, covering her multiple careers as political activist, filmmaker, anthropologist, and musicologist. Includes reminiscences by her colleagues Hella [Heyman] Hammid, Sasha [Alexander] Hammid, Amos and Marcia Vogel, Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas, and Joseph Campbell. Subjects include her association with Katherine Dunham, Gregory Bateson, and Teiji Ito, and her interest in Haitian voodoo. Excerpts from her films Meshes of the afternoon, At land, Ritual in transfigured time, Meditation on violence, and The very eye of night are shown; A study in choreography for camera, with dancer Talley Beatty, is seen in full. The program also includes footage of Haitian voodoo dances from a projected film which was meant to incorporate footage of Balinese ritual dances shot by Bateson and Margaret Mead.
