- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (30 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Documentary about a project to revive the Yup'ik Eskimo tradition of mask dances, undertaken by the Bethel Native Dancers of Bethel, Alaska in 1982. Historical footage and a survey of old masks, now in museums, illustrate past traditions. The Bethel Native Dancers group, which includes carvers, singers, and drummers as well as dancers, is seen in the process of making masks, rehearsing, and finally presenting a performance centering on three masks with symbolic meanings. Other dances glimpsed in performance are a bear dance by an old woman and a wand dance (a traditional dance of welcome).
