SUMMARY: Documentary on the achievements of eleven pioneers of Japanese modern dance: Baku Ishii, Michio Ito, Toshi Komori, Masao Takata, Seiko Takata (also known as Seiko Hara), Kazuo Iwamura, Tomoyoshi Murayama, Goro Yamada, Takaya Eguchi, Eiichi [Yeichi] Nimura, and Yoshio Aoyama. The documentary examines the influence of western dance in Japan, beginning with the arrival of Italian balletmaster Giovanni Vittorio Rosi in 1912, and the influences that Japanese dancers encountered while working abroad with innovators such as Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, Mary Wigman, Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, and others. Related efforts by Japanese modernists in other arts, such as those of the composer Kōsaku Yamada and the art group Mavo, are also discussed. The activities of Japanese dancers who returned to Japan are traced through the postwar period, encompassing the foundation of the Japan Performing Artists Association, the Takata-Yamada Dance Institute, and the magazine Modern dance. Historical footage of dance excerpts includes: The prisoner, danced by Ishii in Germany in 1923; Sacred orangutan, danced by Yamada; Juggler of the Teatro alla Scala, danced by Eguchi; Ballad on a seashore, choreographed by Yamada; Resounding drums of Japan, choreographed by Eguchi; and other works.
