  • Videotaped for the Jerome Robbins Archive by the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services (CASS), East Tennessee State University, on April 29, 1989, at a day-long conference held at the D.P. Culp University Center, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee, with the assistance of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts. Preceded by three dance workshops, probably held prior to the conference in April 1989. The printed program for the conference may be found in *MGZR Old time dancing in the Appalachian Mountains [Clippings].

Workshop in buckdancing led by Jacky Christian (41 min.). - Reel 2 (58 min. total): Workshop in clog dancing led by an unidentified member of the Green Grass Cloggers (26 min.). Opening of the conference (7 min.). "The interweaving of traditions in Appalachian dance," beginning of a speech presented by Lee Ellen Friedland (23-1/2 min.). - Reel 3 (58 min. total): Conclusion of Friedland's speech (13 min.). "European-American traditions" (45 min.). Following interviews with Bill McNeil, callers Veronia Miller and Kirby Smith [not on printed program] teach square dances to the audience. - Reel 4 (62 min. total): Conclusion of Smith's presentation (6 min.). "'Talking feet': Capturing traditional dance on film," speech by filmmaker Mike Seeger (43 min.). Includes video excerpts of performances by Luther Boyd and D. Ray White. "The impact of folk schools and revival movements on traditional Appalachian dance," beginning of a speech by David Whisnant, with moderator Lee Ellen

McNeil discusses jigging and square dancing in the Ozark Mountains. - Reel 7 (62 min. total): Conclusion of panel by McNeil and Quigley (27 min.). Quigley discusses traditional dancing in Newfoundland and shows video excerpts of a circle dance. "Cherokee traditions," beginning of a lecture-demonstration by Walker Calhoun and Gilliam Jackson (35 min.).
