- Summary
- Elaine Nichols, guest curator of history at South Carolina State Museum, describes the African and Afro-American tradition of the ringshout, which combines music, dance, and counterclockwise circling, and was used in rituals honoring the dead. Footage from the film To live as free men (1942), produced by John A. Silver, depicts a ringshout on St. Helena Island.
