Summary

Part of an eleven-cassette compilation by the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services, East Tennessee State University, containing films and videorecordings by various filmmakers and videographers, ranging in date from the 1930s to 1987. The compilation includes both unedited and edited footage of dance, music, and interviews principally from the states of Tennessee, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

CONTENTS: Cassette 10 (60 min. total): Interview with Helen and Don Baker, owners of the Beechwood Family Entertainment Center (approx. 16 min.). Discussing their relatively late start as dancers, the Bakers recall the religious prohibition on dancing in their youth, and recount their decision to open the Center as a place for family participation. Interview with Veronia Miller (approx. 22 min.). Miller, a square dance caller, discusses the fine points of calling and square dancing in general. Interview with Pauline and Emmett Cassell (approx. 22 min.). The Cassells, who both began to dance as children, reminisce about their experiences of dancing over the years. -- Cassette 11 (44 min. total): Interview with Fern Simpson Warren (approx. 30 min.). Warren, who began dancing in childhood, looks back over her years of flatfooting and big ring dancing. - Dance footage (approx. 14 min.). Dancers of all ages, among them the Cassells and Warren, participate in stepdancing, old-time square dancing (with calling by Miller), and the two-step.
