SUMMARY: Ann Hutchinson Guest, dancer, notator, and teacher, recalls her early training in dance and notation at Dartington Hall in England, where she notated The green table and other ballets at the request of Kurt Jooss. She and Martha Hill discuss the introduction of Labanotation to the U.S. by Irma Otte-Betz and Irmgard Bartenieff, and the foundation of the Dance Notation Bureau by Guest, Eve Gentry, Janey Price, and Helen Priest, at the instigation of John Martin. Guest looks back over her career in the U.S., which included performing in Broadway musicals; teaching at the Juilliard School; notating the choreography of Doris Humphrey, George Balanchine, and others; and writing the textbook Labanotation. Since returning to England upon her marriage to dance historian Ivor Guest, she has developed an approach to movement analysis called Language of dance, which is of particular value in teaching young children basic principles of movement.
