Summary
Two programs from the documentary series Rito y geografía del baile flamenco, which presents an extended analysis of different aspects of flamenco dancing, in conjunction with other Spanish dance forms. Performances by amateur and professional dancers are recorded on location, onstage, and in dramatized re-creations of scenes from the past. Additional information is provided through interviews with scholars, dancers, musicians, and others associated with the art of flamenco song and dance.

CONTENTS: Enseñanza y técnica (approx. 29 min.). Discussion of various topics relating to the teaching of flamenco dancing. Includes footage of dance lessons given to students of different ages by Pepe Rios, Matilde Coral, and Cristóbal "El Jerezano." Performance excerpts include: Bulerías, danced by Diego "de la Margara"; Caña, danced by Rosario. Appearing in interviews are: Antonio Gallardo, Diego "de la Margara," bailaor [flamenco dancer] Manuel "de Jesulito," teachers Martinez de Bourio and Ma[ria?] Teresa Martinez, and Rosario. -- Culturas y razas (approx. 29 min.). Investigation of the origins of flamenco, beginning with its precedents in ancient Greece and touching upon the use of zapateado in 18th-century dances such as the canario. Much of the program is devoted to the gipsies and their culture, including their possible origin in India; Gloria Manderik performs a Hindu dance in juxtaposition with a flamenco dance. Other performance excerpts include: El canario, danced by the Ballet de Mariemma; and an informal dance by gipsies living in France. Commentators include: Ahemed Hakal of Egypt; flamencologist Arcadio Larrea; Mariemma and maestro Luzuriaga, who discuss the canario; Ana Lazaro, who points out oriental characteristics in flamenco; and Gloria Manderik.
