Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Former Broadway dancers Buzz Miller and Lee Theodore and dance scholar Barbara Naomi Cohen-Stratyner review the historical background of Broadway dancing, including forms such as toe-tap, jazz dancing, and rock 'n' roll dancing. Theodore describes the golden age of Broadway dance, from the 1920s to the 1950s, and notes changes over the years. Other topics include the contribution of Agnes de Mille, the work of Theodore's American Dance Machine in reconstructing and preserving choreography from musicals, a comparison of Broadway and Hollywood choreography (citing Bob Fosse as a choreographer who worked successfully in both arenas), and the tradition of the gypsy robe. Betty Low's Esoterica balletica [here titled Balletica esoterica] continues the story of the Original Ballet Russe ballet strike in Havana. This story begins in *MGZIC 9-2825 Second time around: Career options for dancers and continues in *MGZIC 9-2828 Broadway dance: Preparing the dancer.
