1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (27 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequence; 3/4 in.
Summary
Filmmaker Mura Dehn discusses her documentary The spirit moves, a groundbreaking record of black jazz dancing in New York in the 1950s, with dancer/folklorist Sule-Greg Wilson and dance historian Sally Sommer. They compare the reception of black culture in Europe and the U.S., examine some popular dances (among them the Charleston, lindy, jitterbug, and cakewalk) that originated in the black community, and view these dances in the historical context of the jazz age. Wilson demonstrates some dances, and "Ladies' free night," a b&w excerpt from The spirit moves, is screened.
