Summary
Dance historian Millicent Hodson discusses her recent reconstruction of Vaslav Nijinsky's The rite of spring for the Joffrey Ballet. Among the sources she describes are reviews, sketches by Valentine Gross, and the memories of Marie Rambert, Nijinsky's rehearsal assistant. Annabelle Gamson, who includes choreography by Isadora Duncan in her performance repertory, relates how these dances are handed down, and notes Duncan's impact on Nijinsky and other Russian dancers. Both guests comment upon the importance of visual sources in capturing the spirit of past dances and dancers. In Esoterica balletica, Hodson talks about Nijinsky's final performance in 1919, and the analysis of his diary instigated by his biographer Françoise Reiss.
