- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Guests are Obara Wali Rahman, founder/director of Sabar ak Ru Afriq; Charles Moore, artistic director of the Charles Moore Dance Theater; and Henry Smith, founder/director of Solaris Dance Theater. Each describes dancing in his respective field of interest: the Wolof people of West Africa; the Shango voodoo ritual of Haiti, Brazil, and Cuba; and the Lakota Indians of South Dakota. Their discussion includes the definition of ritual dancing, how these dances are transmitted, the importance of symbolism, and distinctions between audience and performers and male and female roles in the dances. Moore demonstrates some of the movements of Shango; Rahman demonstrates drumming. Footage of Vision dance, a videodance performed by the Solaris company, is screened. In Esoterica balletica, Dianne McIntyre likens the rhythms of Eubie Blake's piano playing to the drumming of his African heritage.
