- Summary
- Choreographer Erick Hawkins and two of his longtime associates, composer Lucia Dlugoszewski and designer Ralph Lee, discuss different facets of artistic collaboration. Hawkins reminisces about his first work, Show piece, for Ballet Caravan, which sealed his commitment to new music. He cites the importance of Lee's mask designs to Parson Weems and the cherry tree and Plains daybreak, and displays two masks worn in the latter. Dlugoszewski contrasts the collaborative process of herself and Hawkins to that of George Balanchine and Igor Stravinsky, and Merce Cunningham and John Cage.
