1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Merrill Brockway and Judy Kinberg, who with Emile Ardolino formed the original production team of the television series Dance in America, look back upon its beginnings. Veterans of the CBS-TV series Camera Three, they recall the pioneering days of dance on video, and some of the problems they faced and surmounted in the early years of Dance in America. They describe some special requirements of dance in terms of space, camera shots, and editing, citing the special approach of Dance in America editor Girish Bhargava. They also discuss the use of special effects and comment upon collaborating with Peter Martins on the program A choreographer's notebook, an excerpt of which (Tango, danced by Heather Watts and Bart Cook) concludes the program. In Esoterica balletica, author Catrina Neiman cites the innovative techniques and wide influence of filmmaker Maya Deren, particularly in her films A study in choreography for camera, created in collaboration with Talley Beatty, and Ritual in transfigured time, which included performances by Anaïs Nin and Frank Westbrook.
