- Summary
- Choreographers Sophie Maslow and Anna Sokolow reminisce about the dance world in the years following the Depression, recalling their sense of modern dance as a revolutionary medium and an expression of urban life. Among the topics discussed are the influence of Louis Horst as choreographic mentor; the support dancers received from trade unions and fraternal orders; the use of text in dances; Sokolow's Dreams, on the theme of the Holocaust, and her trip to Mexico; the problems faced by Maslow's racially mixed company; the importance of message in their works; and the response of today's dancers to their choreography. Recorded excerpts are shown from Maslow's Dust bowl ballads, danced to Woody Guthrie's song "I ain't got no home in the world any more"; and Sokolow's Ballad in a popular style.
