Summary
Guests are Dr. Howard Siegel, a clinical psychologist; Linda Bechtold, a Joffrey Ballet dancer; and Prof. Marlin McKenzie of the Department of Human Movement Studies at Columbia University. Siegel reports some findings of his psychological study of teenaged ballet students, which was first discussed on the Eye on dance program Dancers' health and well-being: Psychology and movement (see *MGZIC 9-2838). The guests discuss whether a broad or narrow focus is more favorable for success, how to separate personal and performing life, the best mental state(s) for performing, the interaction of dancers as partners and in groups, the beneficial and detrimental effects of competition, and other topics. Bechtold is seen in ballet class in a brief recording. In Esoterica balletica, Michael Vernon relates anecdotes of two dancers who influenced him, Beryl Grey and André Eglevsky.
