Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences; 3/4 in.
Summary
Dancer/choreographers Talley Beatty and Norma Miller discuss how various popular dance forms have been incorporated into theatrical dance over the years. Miller, a well-known exponent of the lindy hop, recalls its creation in the Savoy Ballroom and its introduction into the theater along with the bands and singers of its era. She and others are seen performing the lindy hop in a b&w excerpt from the film Hellzapoppin' (1941), choreographed by Nick Castle. Beatty reminisces about his early work with Katherine Dunham, and talks about finding inspiration in disco dancing, breakdancing, and the rhythms of street life in New York. A b&w excerpt of his work The stack-up, performed by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, is screened. Miller also pays tribute to Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. In Esoterica balletica, dancer Miki Giffune shares her observations of social dancing at clubs in New York.
