- Summary
- Catherine Turocy, artistic director of the New York Baroque Dance Company, discusses athleticism in dance as manifested in the 18th and subsequent centuries. She notes how costume, etiquette and decorum, and different aesthetic sensibilities affected dance technique. She and company member Ken Pierce demonstrate batterie and pirouettes of the baroque period, and she also displays a corset and panniers of the type worn by 18th-century dancers. Other topics include acrobatic dances from Lambranzi's New and curious school of theatrical dancing, the costume innovations of Camargo, the introduction of pointe work, the commedia dell'arte and Italian virtuosity, Weaver's ideas on spectacle, and the sports ballets of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. In Esoterica balletica, Dan Wagoner describes Brambles, a conceptual work created in collaboration with poet George Montgomery.
