Summary
Choreographers Susana Hayman-Chaffey, Robert Small, and Susan Rethorst discuss various aspects of a career as dancer or choreographer. Topics include: what constitutes success for a dancer, what draws dancers to New York (and the advantages of working for regional companies), dancers' pay, and the differences between running one's own company and working in an established company. Hayman-Chaffey talks about her catering business O Tarts, which has helped finance her choreography, and her workshop in overcoming mental and physical handicaps in dance. Recorded excerpts depict Small in his solo Tight, down light; Hayman-Chaffey's performance piece Personal documents; and two works by Rethorst, Public or perish (?) and Mass movement. In Esoterica balletica, William Starrett describes the contents of a typical dance bag.
