Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Guests are dancers Lowell Smith of Dance Theatre of Harlem, Nancy Raffa of American Ballet Theatre, and Ginny Hounsell of the Rockettes. Hounsell lists the qualifications of a Rockette, and discusses the difficulty of precision dancing. Raffa and Smith describe working with choreographers such as David Gordon, Twyla Tharp, and Frederic Franklin. They discuss the challenges of performing in several different dance forms or styles on the same evening, yet note the advantages of a varied repertory. Hounsell displays and talks about the typical Rockette costume. Recorded excerpts depict Smith as Stanley Kowalski in Valerie Bettis's A streetcar named desire, and a men's class at American Ballet Theatre, in which Baryshnikov participates. Esoterica balletica features a recording made by Ipiotis and Bush during the José Limón Dance Company's residency at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, in which Carla Maxwell and Lucas Hoving discuss a work being choreographed by Maxwell.
