Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences; 3/4 in.
Summary
Two-part program. The first part features guests Pat Cannon, director of the Foot and Fiddle Dance Company, whose experience spans Appalachian clogging, country and western dancing, and square dance calling, and Louis Mofsie, director of the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers. The second part features John Lucchese, a lawyer, ballroom dancer, and author. Topics covered by all guests include how dances were handed down and costumes. Cannon also discusses the origins of American folk dances and the function of the square dance caller. An excerpt from her video Duck for the oyster is screened. Mofsie describes the two-step or rabbit dance of the Sioux, an excerpt of which is seen. He also discusses the powwow and "fancy dancing" competitions. Lucchese reminisces about dancing at the Savoy Ballroom, Roseland, and the Palladium in New York, and talks about popular dances such as the lindy and the influence of competitions. His comments are illustrated by b&w archival footage of the lindy and other dances at the Savoy Ballroom.
