- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Elizabeth Aldrich, research director of the Court Dance Company of New York, and dance historian Lynn Garafola, a specialist in Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, discuss audience perceptions of eroticism and sensationalism in the past. Among the examples they cite are the waltz (different styles of which are demonstrated by Charles Garth and Laura Donnelly of the Court Dance Company), the polka, and other social dances; and the ballets Schéhérazade, Parade, and The afternoon of a faun, all first produced by the Diaghilev company. An excerpt of Frederic Franklin's restaging of Schéhérazade, performed by Dance Theatre of Harlem, is screened. In Esoterica balletica, William Starrett discusses practice clothes.
