Summary
Peter Rose, Marleen Pennison, and Ralph Lemon, three performers who combine narrative and dance, talk about their work. Among the topics discussed are why they made the decision to incorporate text in their choreography, the tools of communication they employ (e.g., facial expression, acting), different approaches to narrative structure, and writers and playwrights who have influenced them. Samples of their work include excerpts from Lemon's Folk tales, Pennison's River road sweet and Freeway, and Rose's Off the wall stories. In Esoterica balletica, Butō dancer Yuriko Maezawa performs an improvisation on the theme of a butterfly.
