- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Joseph Campbell, considered the world's foremost expert on mythology, and dancer/choreographer Jean Erdman, his wife, discuss their participation in the early years of American modern dance, especially at Sarah Lawrence, where Campbell first saw and was profoundly impressed by Martha Graham, and at Bennington. Erdman recalls her study of choreography with Louis Horst, and reminisces about her association with John Cage, who composed the score for her work Daughters of the lonesome isle. Campbell discusses the historical function of masks, with particular reference to their use in Erdman's Solstice, an excerpt of which is screened. He also discusses the idea of art as the source of mythology, and the use of mythological motifs by the artist. The latter point is illustrated by an excerpt from Erdman's The transformations of Medusa. In conclusion, an excerpt from Erdman's Chapel perilous is shown.
