Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Joseph Campbell, considered the world's foremost expert on mythology, and dancer/choreographer Jean Erdman, his wife, discuss their recent trip to Athens, where Erdman's The minotaur among us was performed. They also discuss the use of literary themes in choreography; the interrelation of formal, psychological, and mythical values in art; the notion that the artist is the prototype of the modern hero; and their working relationship. Erdman talks about her use of multi-media in her works; as examples, excerpts of Changingwoman and Fearful symmetry, featuring a wearable sculpture by Carlos Dyer, are shown. Erdman also discusses her use of James Joyce's text in The coach with the six insides. In Esoterica balletica, Daniel Lewis talks about his book The illustrated dance technique of José Limón. Jane Carrington demonstrates some of Limón's movement ideas.
