Summary
The guests, all South Africans, are journalist Rob Nixon, dancer/choreographer Frances Becker, Welcome Msomi, the founder/director of Izulu Dance Theater, and Philemon Wakashe, a student of performance studies at New York University. They discuss how apartheid has affected the accessibility of arts training, performances, and opportunities for cultural interchange for both blacks and whites. In noting how the political situation is reflected in South African art, they point out that the performing arts have grown in reaction to the censorship of the print media. Performance excerpts include footage of the Izulu Dance Theater, Becker's performance piece Orbit-orbit, and a work by Matsemela Manaka, a black consciousness writer.
