Summary
The achievements of the Russian dancer/choreographer Bronislava Nijinska are discussed by her daughter Irina Nijinska, while those of Françoise Prévost, an 18th-century ballerina at the Paris Opéra, are discussed by Ann Jacoby, associate director of the New York Baroque Dance Company. Irina Nijinska describes her mother's special qualities as a dancer, especially in her own ballet Les biches. She points out some highlights of Bronislava's career, among them the establishment of the École du Mouvement, intended to train dancers to perform in the ballets of her brother Vaslav Nijinsky, and her choreographic experiments, such as Les noces. An excerpt from Les noces, danced by the Oakland Ballet, is screened. Jacoby describes Prévost's gift for expressivity in a period when dancers still wore masks, and her performance of the solo Les caractères de la danse, which required her to impersonate a dozen different types of lovers. Jacoby is seen performing this solo in a reconstruction by Catherine Turocy. In Esoterica balletica, Turocy talks about masks, the language of the fan, and other accessories associated with baroque dancing.
